We recently had the pleasure of Honda's all-new, safe and affordable 'Dio' NSC110 scooter to zip about town on, and it was a wee beauty too.

Honda's credentials in the scooter market are unsurpassed and the new Dio doesn't disappoint; presenting as a compact power-package designed to meet the broad needs of the commuter market, while remaining environmentally friendly and bloody affordable at just $2995.

With a four-stroke 110cc engine, offering ample performance together with superb fuel economy - a 52km per litre in normal riding conditions - the Dio is ready for anything, whether it's the run to university or a trip to the cafe to meet mates. It'll also haul a hefty weight at the legal motorway speed limit - as demonstrated by Buddha's run up the southern motorway when returning the little Dio to Honda.

Honda's established expertise in four-stroke technology is utilised in the NSC110 to deliver efficiency and performance in its lightweight, compact engine. By choosing air-cooling, the weight and complexity of radiators and a coolant pump have been eliminated, while only four-stroke could offer the efficiency, ease-of-use and impressive quietness required. Controlled by an advanced, programmed fuel injection system (PGM-FI), the engine uses finely-tuned injection technology to meet the most stringent global standards for eco-friendliness - great if you're concerned about your carbon footprint. The engine's PGM-FI system works together with a tri-metal catalyst in the exhaust to deliver low emissions, allowing the Dio to meet the Euro III standard.

Built around a steel tube frame, the Honda Dio features larger-than-average wheel sizes for better stability, and a two-tiered headlight system for improved night-time riding. It also has a CBS or combined braking system, which means pulling one brake lever activates both front and rear brakes for boosted stopping power. At the front, telescopic forks with hydraulic damping keep the ride smooth and composed over the roughest of pothole-filled city streets, while a compact, offset damper controls the movement of the rear-unit swingarm without stealing space from the large lockable storage cubby underneath the seat. Honda says there's enough room for a full-face helmet under there and they're right - but it will just fit one.

The Dio's ergonomic design offers a relaxed riding position, even on longer commutes, while the compact dimensions also give it great agility in tight city streets. Allied to the stable, highly-manoeuvrable chassis, the position of the handlebars has been carefully designed to give the rider a feeling of confident control. The machine's very low overall kerb weight of just 102kg is crucial here too, making the Dio easy to throw about in all conditions.

Three premium colour options are available for the Dio here: Pearl Procyon, Black, Candy Orchid Red and Candy Aruja Blue.
