The look of the new Suzuki GSX1250FA works for me. Its fairing and screen are big enough to be effective on a sports tourer without going overboard and adding too much bulk to the apparent size of the bike.
Apart from the fairing, seat cowl, front guard and a handful of details, this new GSX is mechanically and chassis-wise identical to the GSF1250A Bandit.
In the saddle you feel comfortable, instantly in charge and raring to go. The big liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 1250 fires up easily and settles to a busy idle. Not the quietest engine, it makes noises that are full of promise.
Like its sibling, the GSX1250FA feels more compact and lighter than its reality. These are motorcycles that are there to delight you, without requiring you to jump through hoops to earn your pleasure.
Bulk engine performance is on tap, at your whim, at any revs, it seems. As well as feeling strong and responsive the motor feels unburstable.
The major part of the bike’s peak torque (109.8Nm) seems to be available from about 2500rpm. The peak power figure (72kW) in particular understates the bike’s seat-of-the pants potency.
On the highway it pulls about 3200rpm at 100km/h in top. There’s plenty of grunt at 3200rpm – you don’t need to downshift to make a quick pass. It’s just twist and go. And go you do. It’s as if the gods of speed are behind you, thrusting you forward with relentless force, in the small of your back.
The instruments are easy to read (thankfully including the digi-speedo) and provide lots of information.
The brakes are powerful and progressive with the added safety of sophisticated ABS as standard fitment. Gearshift and clutch operation are to Suzuki’s usual high standard.
Out in the hills it’s a capable bike considering its size and weight and the lack of sophistication of its suspension (adjustability is limited to spring pre-load, front and rear). The slow-in, fast-out technique in the tight stuff guarantees swift progress and intense pleasure from the way it drives out of corners.
Back in town, the 1250FA will have you daydreaming about your next opportunity to escape the city and chase the winding ribbon of bitumen to the horizon.
The 1250FA is hard to beat as a well-priced, high-performance all-rounder.
