Sitting between the entry level XJ6 series and big bore FZ1s, the FZ8 is a pure expression of performance and quality craftsmanship desinged for riders who appreciate an optimum blend of power, weight and size. The new FZ8-series engine is fuel injected, and uses both a throttle valve and an electronically controlled subthrottle valve to provide additional control over intake airflow volume. The cylinder bodies have a bore and stroke from 68.0x53.6mm. Readings on engine rpm and throttle opening are processed in real time by the ECU, which operates a new stepping motor to control the sub-throttle valves and optimise volumetric efficiency in each part of the rev range. Front-end suspension is a pair of upside-down forks, running 43mm inner tubes. Rear suspension is handled by a linked Monocross unit - the link being designed to provide soft, light suspension near the top of the stroke to deal with bumpy surfaces in comfort, but then to provide firmer cushioning as the shock is further compressed, for sharper handling during hard cornering. Front brakes are twin four-piston monobloc calipers, gripping 310mm floating front discs. Being monobloc designs, the calipers suffer minimal distortion under hard braking, so the stopping force is linear, stable and controllable when the chips are down. AN INJECTION OF HYPERACTIVITY It takes a great ATV to turn heads on the track. And while the all-new YFZ450R does exactly that, the just released Special Edition model is likely to turn just as many just sitting in camp. In addition to the laundry list of standard features, the YFZ450R SE includes a new black colour scheme and graphic treatment, as well as quick-release fasteners for no-tools plastic removal. Topping last season's all-conquering YFZ450 was always going to be a challenge. The new 2009 YFZ450R successfully steps up to the No 1 Sports ATV position by moulding totally uncompromising engineering into instant race-winning potential. The YFZ450R story starts with a new, massively rigid but very lightweight cast aluminium and steel hybrid chassis. Though the suspension is wider and longer than the YFZ450's, the YFZ450R is physically shorter overall than its predecessor, giving it a more agile, nimble feel. Sitting low in this chassis is a 449cc 5-valve DOHC liquid-cooled engine with reshaped intake ports and fuel injection controlled by a 32-bit ECU. The engine's dry-sump design allows for a shallower crankcase, lowering the centre of gravity still further for even sharper handling. Pressure lubrication from a separate (small) dry-sump tank inside the crankcase reduces weight and rules out oil starvation under high G-forces. The intake port design and valve timing have both been modified for increased low and midrange power. A new exhaust boosts low and midrange power, while a new five-speed gearbox with taller ratios drives through an up-rated clutch. The result is an ATV packing linear, muscular acceleration. Increased wheel travel and longer suspension arms maximise the YFZ450R's performance potential without compromising overall balance, handling or agility. New tread-pattern tyres make turn-in even sharper and a lightweight 220mm "wave" disc reduces unsprung weight. Ideal riding ergonomics are made possible by a four-setting handlebar adjustment system, a new throttle lever, remodelled seat and wider footrests. YAMAHA REVEALS ALL NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART GRIZZLY More big bore power, more tough off road ability and more compact than ever, the new fuel injected Grizzly 700 EPS features an industry-exclusive electric power steering system that makes it not just the toughest Grizzly ever, but also the smoothest riding. Powering the Grizzly 700 EPS is Yamaha's proven revolutionary fuel injected 686cc, four-stroke forward-inclined single cylinder and liquid-cooled engine. This features a new ceramic composite coated, all-aluminium cylinder, a reverse-facing air intake, electronic fuel injection, straight intake tracts and four valves per cylinder for grunt on tap. It also features a high-efficiency radiator mounted high in the chassis to protect against mud and debris. The Grizzly's power steering system is speed sensitive, so that the rider benefits from more assistance when needed at low speed and less when on the move. A low mounted 20 litre fuel cell centralises mass and ensures that handling characteristics are further optimised. To assist with braking, the engine features Yamaha's Engine Brake Control, which helps to slow the ATV when descending steep downhills. Like the Grizzly 660 4x4, the Grizzly 700 4x4 EPS transfers power from its engine to the wheels through Yamaha's Ultramatic V-Belt transmission featuring high and low range, reverse, plus parking brake. By pressing a button on the handlebar, the rider can also select two or four wheel drive operation. In four wheel drive mode, the Grizzly 700 can use the differential lock to deliver the torque equally to all wheels for maximum traction. The straight layout design of the drive shafts reduces vibration and minimises torque fluctuations in the drive line. Industry-exclusive: three-position On-Command In/Out 4WD feature lets you switch between 2WD, limited-slip 4WD and fully locked differential 4WD all with the simple push of a button.
